MORAN — A pair of old rivals delivered a bit of March madness a week early Monday.
Three Rivers League foes Uniontown High and Marmaton Valley High’s girls were deadlocked with just seconds left when the Lady Eagles’ Tayler Shook hit two free throws with 2 seconds left.
The free throws gave Uniontown a 37-35 lead. Marmaton Valley was unable to get a shot off, giving Uniontown the win.
Marmaton Valley had tied it seconds earlier when Maggie Meiwes drained a three-pointer to tie the score at 35-35.
“We played well on defense, but our offense has been the same story all season,” Marmaton Valley head coach Kent Houk said. “We missed way too many shots inside and way too many free throws.”
The Wildcats were only 10 of 24 from the line and missed several inside shots, Houk said.
The game was tightly fought throughout. Uniontown led 9-8 after one quarter and 20-13 at the break. Marmaton Valley cut the gap to  25-23 by the end of the third quarter.
Meiwes and Morgan Henry each had 11 points and eight rebounds, while Cheyanne Miller scored nine points.
Kailey Boyd had four assists. Jamee McEndree had three steals.
Hayden Rathbun’s 11 points paced Uniontown. Breanna Esslinger added nine.
Neither team has much time to dwell on Monday’s contest. Uniontown travels to Southern Coffey County tonight, while Marmaton Valley hosts Lebo.
