PLEASANTON — Southern Coffey County High’s Lady Titans flat out got after it Saturday night to win their second straight Kansas Class 1A Regional Tournament championship.
The Lady Titans rolled over the Waverly High Lady Bulldogs 59-31 in the regional hosted by Pleasanton High School Saturday. Southern Coffey County led 39-16 at halftime.
“The girls came out and played well from the start,” said Jeff True, SCCH girls’ head coach. “We shot the ball well from inside and outside, did a great job on the boards and did a good job of mixing defenses.”
Both teams advance to Class 1A substate play this Friday. Southern Coffey County (19-4) is the second seed at the substate held in El Dorado. Waverly goes to Emporia.
Also in the El Dorado substate is Yates Center High’s Wildcats. The Wildcats lost 49-21 to St. Paul on Saturday in the regional tournament Yates Center hosted. No report on the game was made to the Register.
Southern Coffey County plays Little River (19-4) at 6 p.m. at Butler Community College’s gym. Yates Center (9-14) takes on No. 1 seeded Argonia (23-0) at 7:30 p.m.
The championship game is at 6 p.m. Saturday.
“We will need to have another good week of practices to get ready for a tough Little River team on Friday.” True said.
Southern Coffey County shot 46 percent, 24 of 52, from the field. The Lady Titans hit 8 of 12 free throw attempts.
Kaitlin Meyer scored 13 points, plus had six re-bounds, four steals and four assists. Laurie Ohl tossed in 10 points.
Kristen Garland handed out four assists. Ashton Gudenkauf made three steals.
Erin Zilliox scored 11 points for Waverly. The Lady Bulldogs were 7 of 8 from the free-throw line.
