LE ROY — Keeping pace in the Lyon County League is tough for Southern Coffey County High’s basketball teams. They had to schedule back-to-back makeup games before the LCL tournament starts next week.
On Thursday, the Titan teams hosted Burlingame High’s Bearcats in league action. They had different outcomes.
The Lady Titans improved to 6-1 in LCL play defeating Burlingame 51-27. Southern Coffey County’s girls are now 8-1 overall.
Burlingame’s boys turned a 23-22 halftime deficit around to beat the Titans 60-56. The Titans dropped to 2-5 in league play and 3-6 overall.
Neither Southern Coffey County team can ponder on Thursday’s games as they travel to Melvin tonight for makeup LCL games with Maris Des Cygnes Valley High.
The Lady Titans pulled away from Burlingame with a strong second half. It was 20-11 at halftime.
“I was pleased with our effort on defense. The girls did a good job on the boards and played with good intensity. We forced quite a few turnovers with our press,” said Jeff True, Lady Titan head coach.
“We struggled at times on offense, especially early in the game.”
True said the Lady Titans took a lot of good shots but had trouble getting them to fall. Southern Coffey County was 17 of 49, 35 percent, from the field. The Lady Titans were 12 of 25 from the free-throw line.
Kaitlin Meyer scored 10 points, had five steals and three assists. Kristen Garland also had 10 points. Laurie Ohl pulled down eight rebounds and had five steals.
Burlingame got nine points from Miranda Fagan. The Lady Bearcats were 12 of 16 from the line.
Burlingame’s boys dropped in 25 of 41 free throws to help their winning cause. The Titans hit 7 of 14 attempts from the line.
Travis Bryan scored 14 points for the Titans. Trevor Smith added 11.
Ty Lang led the Bearcats with 25 points. Austin Masters chipped in with 19 points.
The LCL tournament begins Monday in Emporia.
