LE ROY – Dusty Watts pulled in a 72-yard pass from Wes Callahan with 1:52 left in the first quarter. It was Southern Coffey County High’s first touchdown and its last.
The SCCH Titans lost 56-6 to visiting White City High’s Huskies Thursday night in Kansas Eight-Man Division I, District 3 play. The loss ended the Titans’ season at 3-6.
White City’s season came to an end also even with a 7-2 mark. The Huskies two losses were to top-ranked Madison and second-ranked Lebo in district play.
“I’m proud of the boys. We fought through some injuries and some tough situations. They never stopped working,” said Korey Lankton, who finished his first season as Titan head coach.
When the Watts-Callahan connection clicked for a touchdown, the Titans trailed 14-6. By halftime it was 42-6.
The Huskies added a rushing touchdown in each of the final two quarters. The last one ended the game with 9:21 left in the contest by mercy rule.
The Titans had 107 yards rushing to the Huskies’ 42 yards. It was through the air that White City controlled the game, 15 of 29 for 239 yards passing by Jaren Nittler. Nittler threw six touchdown passes.
Watts led the Titan offense with 55 yards on 11 carries and the one reception. Watts threw a 27-yard pass to Callahan.
Nine players carried the football for Southern Coffey County Thursday night.
“I believe our program at SCC is going to do some good things in the future and this year’s seniors will always be a part of any success that we have,” Lankton said. “They (the seniors) were consistently giving their efforts at practices and on game nights.
“If these younger guys want to start competing at a higher level, the changes have to be made in the next nine months. It’s inevitable.”
Chism Newkirt had three solo tackles and two assisted tackles for the Titans. KEWade Seabolt and Luke Kraft each made two solo stops and three assisted tackles. Callahan had three unassisted tackles and three assisted and Watts had two solo stops and one assisted tackle.
