COLUMBUS — Not much went right for Iola High’s Mustangs in their Southeast Kansas League road game Tuesday.
Jerrik Sigg scored nine of Iola’s first 10 points. He hit two free throws with 5:20 left in the second quarter and never scored again.
Sigg finished as Iola’s leading scorer in a 61-32 loss to host Columbus High’s Titans. The Mustangs dropped to 1-15 overall and 0-4 in SEK play.
“We played very uninspired basketball tonight,” said Bill Peeper, Mustang head coach. “There’s really not a lot different physically between us and other teams.
“It’s our mental toughness. Our expectation level for ourselves is not very high. We have to change that to be successful.”
The Mustangs were hanging with a taller Titan team midway through the first quarter. Sigg’s third basket made it 8-7. Iola trailed 19-8 at the end of the period.
By the middle of the second quarter, Columbus had pushed out to a 27-12 lead. The Titans led 36-17 at halftime
Columbus rolled through the third stanza, 17-8, to a 53-25 advantage. A three-pointer by Montana Grant  opened the fourth period and triggered a running clock.
“Columbus hit a lot of shots tonight but we make a habit of making other people shoot well,” Peeper said.
Iola was 9 of 20 at the line. Columbus cashed in 15 of 19.
Levi Ashmore had four assists and two steals for Iola. Jarred Latta pulled down six rebounds and Christian Kauth had four rebounds.
The Titans ripped the nets for eight three-pointers on the night. Joel Holeman had three of those as he scored 15 points. Owen Jordan added 12 points and Colten Stanley had 10.
Iola’s junior varsity posted a 47-32 win behind the 20-point performance of Devon Conner. Conner also had nine rebounds, four assists and three steals.
The Mustang freshmen claimed a 61-44 victory. Trent Latta tossed in 26 points. Tyler Powelson and Tyler McIntosh each added 10 points.
The Mustangs are at home Friday for homecoming with Pittsburg High’s Purple Dragons coming to the IHS gym.
Iola hosts Chanute and Labette County on Monday and Tuesday of next week. Then finishes the regular season and SEK action at Independence that Thursday.
