The Humboldt Middle School Lady Cubs suffered a pair of losses against Bluestem Thursday night.
The A-Team fell 26-15 and the B-Team fell 31-12 and look for a rebound Monday when they head to Bluestem for the Tri-Valley League Middle School Tournament.
“We did some good things when we attacked on offense, but we just couldn’t finish on a number of really good opportunities,” Humboldt coach Mike Miller said.
The A-Team could not keep up with Bluestem throughout the contest as the Lions pulled away with a pair of 9-point third and fourth quarters.
Hadlee Allen posted a team-leading 8 points while finishing second in rebounds with four boards. Rhys Trieber posted a pair of buckets, followed by a bucket and a free throw by Quinn Miller. Zoey Sanchez had a team-leading six rebounds.
“We handled their pressure much better than we did the last time we played,” Coach Miller said.
“We still had too many turnovers to give us a chance, but I was pleased with the way we executed. Our defense has kept us in many games this year and it was good again last night.”
A second half slump sank the B-Team as Bluestem pulled away with an 11-point fourth quarter.
Brinley Gean had a team-leading 6 points, followed by Lucy Galloway, Aubree Trim and Peyton Weilert each scoring a bucket. Weilert tied Zoey Hess for the team lead in rebounds with four each.
“We didn’t handle the pressure well enough and gave up too many easy layups off of steals,” Miller said. “They sped us up early and once we slowed down, they did a much better job.”
