Turnovers cut into possessions, which means Iola High’s Mustangs are denying themselves opportunities to score.
The Mustangs once again turned the basketball over 20-plus times Tuesday night. That translated into a 60-34 loss to visiting Parsons Highs’ Vikings.
In their first home game of the season, the Mustangs were holding their own despite double digit turnovers in the first half. Iola was down by just two points, 20-18 at halftime.
The Vikings poured in 29 points to the Mustangs’ eight in the third period. They pulled away and never looked back.
“We’re putting parts of games together, not whole games,” said Bill Peeper, Mustang head coach. “We played a good first half. We challenged them on defense and were aggressive on offense.”
The Vikings pushed out to an 8-0 lead. Peeper called a timeout with 4:58 left in the first quarter.
The Mustangs responded with a six-point run. Levi Ashmore and Charles Apt had back-to-back baskets. Jerrik Sigg hit two free throws.
Parsons’ Wes Krull scored but Apt answered. A basket by Braden Larson tied the game at 10-10.
Steve Jones hit one of two free throws with 19.3 seconds remaining. Iola’s Larson did the same with 3.3 seconds. The teams were locked at 11-11.
Jones and Krull gave the Vikings a four-point lead to open the second period. Iola stayed with Parsons as Sigg scored five of its seven points in the quarter.
Iola was in the game and a good position at the break.
But turnovers played a big part in Parsons’ big third quarter.
“We’re getting great effort but what we do with that effort sometimes is not good,” Peeper said. “We have to take care of the basketball much better. Turnovers limit us in chances to score.”
The loss dropped the Mustangs to 0-5. They finish their pre-Christmas schedule at home Friday against Independence.
“We have one more before the break, then we’ll have some time to work on things in practices,” Peeper said.
Sigg ended up with 11 points, going 7 of 8 from the free-throw line. Apt scored 10 points.
Larson had five rebounds and Corey Taylor had four rebounds. Clint Heffern handed out two assists.
Iola shot 39 percent, 12 of 31, from the field. It sank 10 of 12 free throw attempts.
Brock Borovetz paced the Vikings with 14 points. Jones added 13 and Krull had 12.
Parsons won the junior varsity game 54-41. Jarred Latta had nine points for Iola.
The Mustang freshmen pulled out a 44-42 win in overtime. Trent Latta fired in a three-pointer with 20 seconds left in regulation to force overtime. The teams were tied 38-38.
Adam Kauth led Iola with 13 points. Tyler Powelson had 12. T. Latta scored nine points.
