YATES CENTER — Visiting West Elk High’s hustle turned into a disappointing loss for Yates Center High’s boys Tuesday.
West Elk used its ability to get to loose balls and rebounds and make plays down the stretch to turn a two-point lead into a 60-50 win.
The loss drops Yates Center’s record to 6-5 on the season.
The game was tightly fought through the first three periods. The Patriots led 15-13 after one period and the game was knotted 23-23 at halftime. West Elk edged out to a 37-35 lead after three quarters before ending the game with a 23-15 run.
“We just got outplayed,” Wildcat head coach Jason Weilert said. “They just worked harder than we did tonight.”
Dalton Smith scored 18 points and Paul Stockebrand nine to lead Yates Center. Levi Smith’s 19 points paced West Elk, followed by Bradley Linder with 16.
Yates Center won the junior varsity contest 33-31, led by Blake Francis with 13 points.
Yates Center travels to Humboldt Thursday for a game that had been postponed from earlier in the season due to snow.
