HUMBOLDT — A little revenge was taken Monday evening by Marmaton Valley High’s Wildcats.
A year ago the Wildcats took the Humboldt High Cubs in a regional championship game and lost 12-2 in five innings. The Cubs went on to place third in the state Class 2-1A tournament.
On Monday on Humboldt’s home field, Marmaton Valley jumped out to a big 6-0 lead in the first inning and won 9-4. The Wildcats improved to 3-15 overall and moved into the regional semifinals.
The Cubs finished at 4-14 for the season.
“We showed up to play right from the start,” said Derek Scharff, Wildcat head coach. “This was our best overall game of the year.”
The Wildcats led 6-1 after three innings. Each team scored a run in the fourth.
Marmaton Valley added single runs in the sixth and seventh innings. Humboldt scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh.
Ethan Ericson, a senior, went the distance on the mound for the Wildcats. He gave up four hits and walked four. He racked up 10 strikeouts.
“Ethan pitched a great game. We had a couple of errors in the field but they didn’t hurt us like they could have,” Scharff said. “We hit the ball well.”
Marmaton Valley cranked out 16 hits in Monday’s victory.
Taylor Lhuiller delivered two doubles and two singles, driving in two runs. Hitting two singles each were Jimmy Frye, Tanner Lewis, Derrick Carr and Nathan Whitcomb.
Cole Becker hit a single and a double. Nathan Smart had a base hit. Carr and Whitcomb each had two RBIs.
“We know we can compete with everyone in this regional because we have played all of them close during the regular season,” Scharff said. “We have to continue hitting the ball and minimize errors in the field.”
Scharff said if the Wildcats’ younger pitchers can come in and throw strikes then “we’ll be fine the rest of the tournament.”
There was no report to the Register on Humboldt High’s individual statistics from Monday’s game.
Humboldt is hosting the Kansas Class 2-1A Regional Baseball Tournament.
Marmaton Valley ad-vanced to the semifinals. The Wildcats face Uniontown (6-9), the top seeded team, at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Walter Johnson Field.
The other semifinal has No. 2 seeded Jayhawk-Linn (7-11) going against Yates Center (6-13) at 4:30 p.m.
The regional championship game is at 7 p.m. Wednesday. The champion advances to the Kansas Class 2-1A State Baseball Tournament May 28-29 in Emporia.
