HUMBOLDT — Sterling individual performances, foul trouble, and plenty of intense play.
Yep, it was time for another Yates Center High-Humboldt High contest.
In the end, Yates Center’s three-pronged attack featuring Paul Stockebrand, Blake Francis and Dalton Smith was enough to vanquish Humboldt’s one-two punch of Tanner McNutt and Noah Thornburgh. The Wildcat trio scored a combined 54 points — compared to the combined 42 by Humboldt’s pair — as Yates Center won 63-40.
The win lifts Yates Center’s record to 11-4. Humboldt falls to 5-10.
“It was a good game,” Humboldt head coach David Taylor said. “We played very well through the first half and into the third quarter. One of the guys in the locker room said it best: sometimes we’re our own worst enemy.”
Yates Center led 15-14 after one period and 29-28 at the break. An 18-10 Wildcat run pushed Yates Center on top 47-28.
The Wildcats sealed the win at the free throw line, after struggling earlier in the game. Yates Center hit 8 of 12 charities in the fourth quarter, after connecting on only 3 of 6 in the first three periods.
“It was a typical Humboldt game,” Yates Center head coach Jason Weilert said. “Both teams were in foul trouble, so we had match up with different guys. I’m proud of our kids. They came out and hit shots.”
Stockebrand scored 19 points, followed by Francis with 18 and Smith with 17.
McNutt poured in a game-high 24 points to lead Humboldt to go with nine rebounds. Thornburgh had 18 points and 10 boards. Derrik McCall recorded three assists; Nathan Whitcomb had two steals.
In junior varsity action, Humboldt defeated Yates Center 55-33. Nick Wiltse scored 15 to lead Humboldt. Robert Arnold scored 18 for the Wildcat JV.
Friday’s win was the second in two nights for Yates Center’s varsity. The Wildcats defeated Cherryvale 55-42 on Thursday night. Smith scored 16.
