The Marmaton Valley Wildcats continue searching for their first win after dropping both games of a Tuesday doubleheader against the Riverton Rams, 15-0 and 6-4.
With only junior second baseman Garrett Morrison and freshman catcher Kaden McVey getting hits in the opener, the Wildcats were much more competitive in the finale, but fell after Riverton scored two unanswered runs in the fifth inning.
McVey and Morrison split time on the mound in the opener with Morrison tallying the Wildcats’ only strikeout. In the finale, Kaden McVey lit the scoreboard for the first time that day with an RBI single, then Kris McVey’s hard grounder added another run to narrow Riverton’s lead to 4-2. Senior shortstop Dominic Smith tied the game after plating junior pitcher Tyler Lord, then scoring himself on a passed ball. That was as close to victory as Marmaton Valley would get as Riverton scored two answered runs in the fifth to seal the victory.
Kaden McVey had the Wildcats only RBI in the finale while going 2 of 3 in the batter’s box. Junior first baseman Todd Stevenson also hit in 2 of 3 appearances at the plate and freshman outfielder Thomas Allee had a perfect outing after hitting 2 of 2 with a run. On the mound, Smith, Lord and Allee each made appearances but Smith had a team-leading seven strikeouts over three innings while allowing two runs and two walks.
With the losses, the Wildcats fall to 0-4 and host Pleasant Valley for their home opener Thursday with games slated for 4:30 and 6:30 p.m.
