YATES CENTER — “it became a free-throw shooting contest,” said Abbie Collins, Yates Center High girls’ head coach, of the Wildcats’ 47-45 overtime win Thursday.
Yates Center built a 25-19 halftime lead over visiting Cherryvale but only led by one after three quarters. Cherryvale High’s Chargers forged a 39-39 tie at the end of regulation.
That forced the game into overtime. Cherokee Shaffer sank the final free throw of the night, giving the Wildcats a two-point cushion with 10 seconds left in the extra period.
“We played aggressive and put them on the line. It came down to which team made free throws,” Collins said.
Yates Center was 14 of 28 at the line while Cherryvale was 15 of 35.
The Wildcats are 2-7 in Tri-Valley League play and 4-10 overall.
Shaffer had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Autumn Douglas had 14 rebounds and Jessica Hartwig had five steals.
Mary Reilly led Cherryvale with 13 points.
There was no report to the Register on the Yates Center boys’ game from Thursday night.
Yates Center plays at Humboldt tonight.
