WICHITA — Maggie Wilson is the third-best girl pole vaulter in Kansas Class 4A in 2010.
She wanted to be the top pole vaulter in her class but “third, I’ll take it.”
The Iola High junior collected her second state pole vault medal on Saturday at the 2010 Kansas State High School Track and Field Championships. Wilson cleared 11 feet at the state meet.
She was sixth as a freshman. Wilson qualified for the state meet a year ago but suffered a concussion the week of the state meet and couldn’t compete.
“I’m happy with third right now but disappointed I didn’t go higher,” Wilson said. “I need to work on my form.”
For the third straight year, Jaime House of El Dorado won the 4A pole vault competition. The junior cleared 12 feet, 1 inch to break her previous state meet mark of 12 feet.
Wilson also combined with sophomores Kendra Tailcet and Kelsey Larson and senior Jazmyne Honeycutt to captured the seventh-place medal in the 4A girls’ 4×100-meter relay race.
The Iola foursome ran the race in 51.46 seconds. Maize South edged Iola out of sixth at 51.45 seconds.
“The girls ran a good race but I think they were a little conservative with the handoffs,” said Marvin Smith, IHS head track coach. “The handoffs were clean but we weren’t getting out quick with them. I’m happy they were able to medal, especially for Jazmyne.”
Larson came back right after all the boys’ 4×100-meter relay races to run in the 400-meter final. Larson posted the eighth-fastest time in the preliminaries and she finished eighth in the final in 1:01.99.
On Friday, Taiclet ran seventh in her preliminary heat race of the 300-meter low hurdles in 50l33 seconds. She did not advance to the finals.
Nor did Larson in the 200-meter dash in 28.73 seconds. Senior Mindy Powelson finished her IHS career taking ninth in the 4A javelin event with a throw of 109’2”.
And of note, Iola High’s Molly Lonergan held the Class 4A girls’ state meet discus record, 150’7”, since 2000. Kearsten Peoples, Ottawa High senior, shattered the mark Saturday morning.
Peoples broke the record on her first throw, 165’10”, then extended it with a winning throw of 166’7”. Peoples also has the best shot put throw, 51’10”, by a high school girl in the nation. She won the 4A title on that throw Friday.
