ROSALIA — Yates Center High’s one-two punch of Caleb DeNoon and Cameron Brown proved to be too much to overcome for visiting Flinthills High and its singular star, Michael Hinnen, Tuesday evening.
DeNoon exploded for 21 of his 23 points after halftime, while Brown was the team’s catalyst in the first two quarters, scoring 16 points before intermission.
They paved the way for the Wildcats to overcome Flinthills 59-51.
The Flinthills Mustangs didn’t go away without a fight.
The Mustangs led 14-13 after one quarter before Yates Center eked out a 27-25 lead at halftime. The Wildcats led 41-38 after three quarters.
Yates Center outscored the Mustangs 18-13 down the stretch to seal the win.
Brown wound up with 21 points for the Wildcats, while Robert Arnold scored seven.
Hinnen scored 24 points to lead all scorers for Flinthills, but he was the only Mustang player in double figures.
Yates Center (3-3) returns to action Thursday at home against Neodesha.
