Yates Center High’s boys doubled-up on wins for Thursday and Friday in their preseason tournament at home, topping Altoona-Midway first, then Cherryvale.
For Thursday’s victory, the Wildcats came out strong in the second half after holding a close match in the first, edging out the 66-49 win.
The Wildcats  35-33 over the Jets at halftime. They came out with a 21-11 third quarter spurt to seize control.
Cameron Brown led the way with 24 point performance, along with Caleb DeNoon with 18.
In Friday night’s victory for Yates Center High over Cherryvale, the conclusion came down to the wire, ending in a 73-72 nail-biting finish.
The first quarter started close and would set the tone for the entire game.
The Chargers led 20-19 after one quarter before Yates Center took the upper hand at halftime, 44-41.While the second half slowed down slightly in scoring, the leads remained tight. The Wildcats outscored the Chargers 17-13 in the third quarter to lead 61-54.
Cherryvale outscored Yates Center 18-12 in the fourth quarter, but came up one point short.
A Yates Center victory would have been an impossibility without the high-caliber scoring performance from Brown, who had 29 points in the contest. Denoon followed with 12. Trevor Chism came up with 11. The Wildcats went 19 for 27 from the foul line, an impressive 70.4 percent.

Yates Center High’s girls won in a big way over Altoona-Midway High in their preseason tournament Thursday night, 55-17.
Bailie Chambers was hot from the field for the Wildcats. She dropped 21 points in the contest, followed by Emily Baker with nine. Mindi Holloway had five. Paige Steinforth, Jessica Rossillon, Shayna Karmann and Rachel Busteed each had four points. Kendra Leach and Aubrey Smith had two points apiece.
Nichole LaCrone led Altoona-Midway with five points.
The Wildcat girls’ results from Friday were unavailable at press time.
The Yates Center squads resume play Tuesday at Humboldt.
