Iola Middle School’s seventh-grade A team picked up a hard-fought victory Monday over visiting Independence.
The 43-41 win marked Iola’s only victory on the day, however.
The Ponies took control with a 12-2 second-quarter run to lead 21-9.
Independence didn’t go down without a fight, closing the margin to 27-22 by the end of the third quarter.
“This was a good win against a very good team,” IMS head coach Marty Taylor said. “Learning to win against good teams in close games is a big step for these kids.”
Isaac Badders led the way with 16 points and 9 rebounds. Kole Rogers scored 10. Jack Adams added 6 points, Henry Wicoff had 5 points and 6 boards, and Dillon Bycroft and Eli Smith added 4 and 2 points, respectively.
IOLA’S eighth-grade A team started out just fine. It was the end that caused the Ponies fits.
Independence outscored Iola 39-7 over the third and fourth quarters to win 56-18.
The lead was 17-12 at the break.
“Our first half was outstanding,” IMS head coach Marty Taylor said. “We stopped penetration and guarded their shooters. We just couldn’t keep it up all four quarters.”
Cal Leonard scored 10 points and Cason Barker 8 to pace the Ponies.

IN B team play, Iola fell, 29-23 in the eighth-grade game.
Ethan Hamm scored 8, Asher Sievers, Keian Zimmerman 3, and Brody Nemecek, Pieter Venter and Elijah Fawson 2 apiece.
The B team fell, 20-13. Josh Kaufman, Eli Smith and Cameron Wells each had 3 points for Iola. Dillon Slaven and Gage Turner both scored 2.
IMS hosts Fort Scott Thursday.
