EUREKA — In a pretty cleanly played basketball game, Humboldt High’s Cubs took advantage of getting to the free-throw line eight times as many as their opponent.
The Cubs went 7 of 9 at the line in the fourth quarter in sealing a 44-39 win over host Eureka High’s Tornadoes Tuesday. Humboldt was 10 of 16 for the game while Eureka was 2 of 2.
“We didn’t play hard until the fourth quarter when we had to come from behind,” said David Taylor, Cub head coach.
“Our kids walked in there  thinking Eureka hasn’t that much success this year and we didn’t need to play with much intensity. We learned another lesson.”
The Tornadoes, winners of just one game this season, took the Cubs to the mat to lead 33-29 after three quarters. Humboldt led 23-19 at halftime.
Tevin Strack put together another strong performance for the Cubs with 20 points. Eleven of those came in the fourth quarter and he was 5 of 7 at the line.
Trey Johnson sank two free throws in the fourth quarter on his way to a 10-point performance.
Strack also pulled down nine rebounds, made eight steals and had three assists. Noah Thornbrugh had nine points and eight rebounds for the Cubs.
“The Eureka kids played hard the whole game and really deserved to win the game. Our kids had about two or three minutes late that they worked hard and it saved a win for us,” Taylor said.
Tyler Kuhn hit two three-pointers as he scored 14 points for the Tornadoes. Seth Spore fired in 10 points.
Humboldt improved to 4-1 in Tri-Valley League play and 8-3 overall. Eureka fell to 0-6 in league play and 1-10 overall.
Humboldt’s girls lost 65-15 Tuesday to Eureka. The Lady Cubs are 0-5 and 0-11. No details on the game were called in to the Register.
Humboldt hosts Yates Center Friday in a make-up doubleheader. The Cub teams host Fredonia Friday.
