Members of the USD 257 board of education last night voted to seek approval from the state board of education to hold a bond election for an amount not to exceed $5.9 million, to build a new high school and renovate three elementary schools.

Flash-flooding yesterday along Coon Creek, which drains a watershed extending just north and east of Iolas city limits, was caused by torrential rains, measuring from two and a half to three and a half inches, depending on the location of the gauge. The flooding threatened several Iola homes and the Country Side Estates nursing home. It was the second time in two weeks that Coon Creek had escaped its banks to cause traffic problems on State and Cottonwood streets.

Dr. Lyle Schmaus, 79, is being honored by the town to which he has given 46 years of service. Sunday, July 8, has been proclaimed as Dr. Lyle Schmaus Day by Iola Mayor Jack Hastings. A public reception to honor Schmaus will be Sunday at the new community building in Shepherd Park, sponsored by the Allen County Hospital trustees.
