Dr. H.L. Bumgardner of Emporia announced he will open an office in Iola on April 1 where he will practice optometry. Dr. Bumgardner has leased a suite of rooms at 14½ S. Washington.

Mr. and Mrs. L.C. Staley are formally announcing this week a drapery and upholstery business they are conducting at their home, 219 N. Second St. Mrs. Oscar Broughton is employed full time as an assistant and Mrs. Waldo Bain is a part-time employee.

William M. Fowler is completing preparations for the opening of a photographic studio and camera supply shop on the west side of the square over Cook’s Drug store.

Housewives of Allen and adjoining counties will be called to their front doors during the first two weeks of April by the knock of the census takers from the U.S. Bureau of Census. Mrs. Thelma Linville of Humboldt is crew chief for the work in Allen County, and 20 representatives have been secured to make the calls.

COLONY — Mr. and Mrs. U.G. Whitaker report the sale of the stock and fixtures and the leasing of the Hotel Whitaker to Mr. and Mrs. F. W. Krauturm of Kansas City, who will take charge April 3 and will continue to operate the cafe and hotel.

Marty’s Sport Shop, a new women’s wear store, will open at 105 S. Washington, in the space formerly occupied by the Dutch Mill restaurant. The store will carry nothing that sells for more than $5. The new shop will be managed by Mrs. Mary Jean “Marty” Cockayne.
