The Senior Citizens Center, sponsored by the Community Action Program and located in the building formerly used by the Lewis Paint Co. at 208 S. Jefferson, is now open. Present plans call for the center to be open for group meetings of women on Tuesday afternoons at 2 p.m. and for men on Thursday afternoons. It will be staffed by Community Aides and by volunteer workers.

Debra Dene Barnes of Moran became the bride of Mitchel Eugene Miles Saturday at the United Methodist Church of Moran. Both are students at Pittsburg State College and will be at home there following a short wedding trip. Mrs. Miles was the 1968 Miss America.

Arthur R. Murphey, owner and operator of the Aladdin Gift and Appliance Shop on the west side of the square, died at Allen County Hospital Monday. He had been ill for about a year. Mrs. Murphey owned the Aladdin Dress Shop which she still manages. Mr. Murphey was one of Iola’s first electronic enthusiasts and produced records of music played by local musicians featuring local vocalists.

Expenditures expected to total nearly $400,000 were approved by the Iola City Commission and the Iola utilities advisory board. Construction of two additional electric transmission lines from the power plant to the city were authorized and bids will be sought to build a new diesel generation plant. The purchases were recommended by a Kansas City engineering firm.

Five Allen County farmers will be honored for their conservation work at the annual meeting of the Soil Conservation District tomorrow evening. They are Harold Whitaker, Myrle Mann, Buford Larson, Elvin Butts and William Klotzbach.
