A fundraising event brought nearly $27,000 for scholarships for student athletes at Allen Community College.

The Annual Red Scholarship Athletic Gala March 24 collected a record $26,887 after expenses, making it the most successful gala to date, Aimee Thompson, ACC director of development, said. Last year’s event raised $18,500.

The most coveted prize of the evening was a package to see a Wichita Thunder hockey game, donated by Monarch Cement Company. The package included 12 passes to a game with access to the Monarch suite, $500 in food and beverages and three parking passes. That brought a bidding war between two people, which ended when Monarch officials said they’d provide two packages if both bidders accepted the current bid of $1,500 for a total of $3,000.

Three former Chiefs players attended the event: John Lohmeyer, Trent Bryant and Anthony Davis. Thompson credited the ACC Endowment Association board for their efforts to make the scholarship gala a success.
