The foxes didn’t quite run the henhouse Wednesday, but it was close. At least Iola Elementary School students got away with extra recess. They had kindergartener Asher Reed, second grader Zaylee Blazek and third grader Ruby Shephard to thank. The three were, respectively, superintendent, principal and assistant principal for the day, honors secured thanks to a raffle drawing from Iola PTO’s carnival last month.
The three IES students shadowed their counterparts for the day, making the morning announcements, leading the pledge of allegiance, and visiting the USD 257 board office and community preschools. The toughest decision they were faced with seemed to be where to eat lunch – and what flavor of ice cream they wanted for dessert.
The experience seemed to have a lasting impression on the children. Both Blazek and Reed said they want to be teachers when they grow up. Shephard said she hopes to become a lawyer.
