CHANUTE — Chanute High School’s chess team recently won its ninth straight Kansas Class 4A Chess Championship, the Chanute Tribune reported.

And that’s not all. The Blue Comet Chess Team also secured the All-State Championship for the first time in over 30 years.

Chanute High School  was also recognized for having hosted a Scholastic Chess Tournament since 1980, the longest in the state.

“Even during Covid, we held virtual tournaments,” said the team’s coach, Kyle Gregg, who also serves as a classroom aide at the high school.

This is Gregg’s third year as the coach for the chess team, initially begun in 1980 by Bob Larney.
