What could be more fun than pelting your friend in the ribs with a spongy ball during the course of an otherwise normal school day? Doing it for a good cause.

Iola Middle School combined the best in fun and fundraising this week when it hosted a two-day dodgeball tournament intended to raise money for the American Heart Association. The games were preceded by a period of fundraising, from which Will Talkington emerged the top earner with $337. In total, middle schoolers raised $2,958.16.

The competition on Tuesday and Wednesday was brutal. In the end, a team made up of IMS faculty defeated the fifth- and sixth-graders. But it was the Conches — a squad comprised of Eli Adams, Carter Hutton, Kyler Mittlemeier, Holden Barker, Jack White, Jake Skahan, Jarrett Herrman, and Brandon McKarnin — who entered their holiday break in the knowledge that they are the true dodgeball champs.
