OSAWATOMIE, Kan. (AP) — Miami County authorities say several cars of a Union Pacific train derailed just east of Osawatomie.
No injuries or health hazards were reported after the derailment Saturday afternoon in rural Miami County.
The sheriff’s office said in a news release that 22 cars separated from the 169-car freight train. Sixteen of those cars derailed, spilling their contents. Union Pacific officials said the car was carrying several items including coal, fuel and oil.
A hazardous materials team called to the scene determined that the derailment posed no health risks.
The railroad is investigating to determine the cause of the crash.
The derailment is the second in two weeks for Union Pacific along the same rail corridor. Another train left the tracks four miles south of Moran on May 23.
