Artist Deann Norris’ enthusiasm in demonstrating the painting technique called impasto sparked the creative juices in Tera Reed’s students at Allen County Community College as they put palette knives to work spreading paint using the technique.
Impasto painting is a technique where paint is laid on very thickly so that brush or painting knife strokes are visible in the finished artwork.
Norris is an adjunct faculty member at Pittsburg State University.
While in high school, Norris said she enjoyed art classes and playing sports. She began college as a nursing major.
“It wasn’t long until my creative needs took over and I switched my major to art,” Norris said.
Norris’ oil paintings are a reflection of her emotions, she said.
The ground in her paintings represent the constant, stable environment in her life and the clouds show her daily changing moods.
“I have been labeled a free spirit, and I hope that spirit is what people see when they look at my paintings,” Norris said.
Norris’ work will be on display in the college art display case near the library until March 20.
