HUMBOLDT — The Growing Place child care center held an open house to show an addition to the facility located at 1050 Industrial Rd. in Humboldt. Two large rooms — one for preschool and after-school programs, the other a nursery, a laundry and a bathroom are in the new addition.
“Preschool will be held when the older kids are in school and the room will be used for the older kids when school is out,” said preschool teacher Shiela Proper. “On school holidays and snow days, the room will be used for the older students and the preschool will have a holiday or snow day. It really works out well and the room is being used at all times that way.”
The baby room is equipped with two complete changing areas, a sleeping area and rocking chairs.
“We follow a curriculum set by the state for all ages,” said Janie Works, owner of the center. “We have lesson plans for all ages. We also play old time games and activities.”
Child care centers are required to have one hour of outside play time for every four hours of care. “Children and teachers have to come prepared for the heat in the summer and the cold in the winter,” Works said. “Of course, there are days when the weather is just too bad for the children to go out.”
The center has only one TV, which is seldom used.
