A group of middle-schoolers didn’t venture far for their “mission trip” this week.
The Wesley United Methodist Church youth have been doing work for elderly members of the church’s congregation this week as part of a community service project.
“These kids are looking forward to getting a chance to go on mission trips elsewhere,” Lori Cooper, youth minister at Wesley, said.
She noted a high school youth group is preparing for a mission trip to Minnesota in July.
“Some of these kids will get a chance to go on trips next year, but we wanted to do something here this summer,” Cooper said.
A nine-member group did yard work and other chores for three congregation members, focusing their energies Tuesday morning at the home of Jean Roberts.
“I just can’t get down and do yard work,” Roberts said. Her husband had been responsible for the yardwork, but after he died, Roberts’ daughter and son-in-law handled mowing chores.
Tuesday’s efforts included mowing the lawn, raking away twigs and other unwanted elements from her flower garden, sweeping off a patio and other similar tasks.
“These kids are doing a great job,” Roberts said. “They’ve been a tremendous help.”
