Young kids and the young at heart went to the Flewharty-Powell Annex Monday evening to get their hands a little dirty and learn how to decorate gingerbread houses.
The class, hosted by the Iola Area Chamber of Commerce, was held to get people prepared for the Gingerbread Walk, a contest where submitted gingerbread creations are placed in different store fronts around town to be voted on.
The most important rule of the contest is everything must be edible.
This will really test the imagination.
Some of the tricks of the gingerbread house making trade are: Royal icing is used as glue, Sourpatch Kids can be people, upside-down waffle cones can be decorated Christmas trees, Jolly Ranchers can be glass windows and pretzels can be a fence.
Dry foods are the best and are slow to disintegrate.
The contest will run Dec. 7-22.
