Kim Bender figures it was “a one in a billion” chance that somebody would drive into the side of her restaurant, B & B Country Cafe, until it happened about a month ago.
Imagine her surprise Thursday afternoon when something way too similar happened again, this time at her home at 717 S. Sycamore St.
Cassie Gird lost control of her car while turning onto Irwin Street from South Sycamore and wound up driving through Bender’s yard and crashing into the side of her house.
Gird was taken to Allen County Hospital for minor injuries. Neither Bender, nor her daughter, who also was in the house, were injured, although Bender is starting to wonder “what I have to do to get rid of this black cloud that seems to be following me.”
Bender and her daughter were in the living room just minutes before the accident occurred. They had walked into another room when they heard the crash and felt the house shudder.
“I saw our bookcase had fallen, and I could see the Sheetrock was busted,” Bender said, “and the room was filled with smoke.”
Bender’s daughter peeked out the window to see the car.
“I know we’re really fortunate,” Bender said. “These are just things that were damaged and nobody was hurt. But I’m thinking if too many things like this keep happening, then I’m going to end up in the looney bin.”
The Iola Police Department said this morning that an investigation into the cause of the crash continues.
