Representatives of Humanity House asked USD 257 board members to restore bus services to low-income students who live on Eisenhower Drive.
Georgia Masterson spoke to the board on behalf of Humanity Houses clients who live on the street. The district provided bus service to the neighborhood last year but is not doing so this year.
Four families are affected, Masterson said, that do not have reliable transportation. Humanity House volunteers have been transporting the children to and from school, but do not have room for a middle school and a high school student.
The path to walk to and from school is not safe, Masterson said. There are no sidewalks most of the way and poor lighting, plus kindergarten students who travel to McKinley must cross U.S. 54.
Were very concerned about the safety of those children and whats going to happen to those older kids when the weather changes and it gets dark, Masterson said. If we lose our community volunteer, we have no other way of transporting those children.
School board president Dan Willis said the board would look into options, perhaps pursuing a grant for sidewalks through the Safe Routes to School program.
