GAS — Residents here will pay an additional $1 a month for once-a-week trash pickup, council members decided Tuesday evening.
The rate had been $7.50 a month since January 2012.
Bids will be opened on March 21 to determine what contractor will demolish a house at 214 N. Wall and clean up ensuing debris. The house was condemned earlier.
City Superintendent Steve Robb said he intended to wait until fair weather was assured before seeking bids for improvements to a water line that runs along U.S. 54. “If we do it too early, there’s liable to be a lot of messes in yards,” Robb said.
Elections will remain non-partisan, council members decided unanimously, in an amendment to an ordinance that moves elections for mayor and council positions from spring to fall, per state law. Filing by petition will require 1 percent of voters, or three for any position. Filing fees, by state law, increased from $5 to $20.
Robb pointed out watertight information panels, each 24-by-30 inches, would be placed on the exterior of City Hall and the Community Building, to appraise residents of “what is coming up.”
City Clerk Rhonda Hill said a dog clinic April 1 will be 9 to 11 a.m. at City Hall. Clean-up week will be April 17-21.
