The 15th annual Hooked On Fishing, Not On Drugs derby will bring young sportsmen to Abbott’s Pond Saturday morning.
The event, sponsored by the Iola Police Department, offers prizes to the first 200 children ages 2-17 who register.
Youngsters will have their pick between fishing poles, sleeping bags or lanterns, organizer Mike Ford said.
Registration begins at 8 o’clock, with organizers listing the rules at 9 o’clock. Online registration also can be done in advance at www.cityofiola.com.
The fishing takes center stage from 9:30 to 11, at which time the children will feast on lunch.
Prizes for biggest, most, smallest fish will be presented, as well as other awards given away in different age divisions.
Abbott’s pond is on the west side of North Cottonwood Street and south of Miller Road.
Families can park in the Cameron parking lot at 25 W. Miller Rd. for easy access to the pond.
