HUMBOLDT – A vacancy on the Humboldt City Council here may be filled at the governing body’s next meeting on Oct. 9.
Mayor Nobby Davis announced Monday evening the vacancy was created by first-term councilman Jeb Kaufman deciding to move from Humboldt. Anyone living in the city south of Bridge Street is eligible to fill the unexpired term for Ward 1, Position 1. Interested parties may make their interest known by contacting City Administrator Cole Herder or Mayor Davis.
Herder said some residents had expressed concern about a recycling bin near Moon’s grocery more often than not being full. JKS, a private sanitation company based in Erie, collects trash in Humboldt and is responsible for local recycling efforts.
Herder said the company, which recycles trash only in Humboldt, was making strides toward improving that feature of its service.
Since 2009 it has hauled five semi-trailer loads of corrugated cardboard from the Moon’s collection point, a total of about 100 tons. Plastic also is collected, but its recycling is hampered by Styrofoam and common household trash being tossed into bins meant for recyclables.
Westar is completing underground electric service to downtown Humboldt and lights on Bridge and New York streets should be in operation soon, Herder said.
He pointed out Nina Froggatte had accepted a position with the Iola Police Department soon after she completed Police Academy training, with intention to work in Humboldt. The change means, by way of state statute, Iola is responsible for Froggatte’s training, which cost about $10,000. Josh Miller, who has experience at the Allen County Jail and elsewhere, has filled the spot on Humboldt’s force that had been reserved for Froggatte.
