Sixty Iola Middle School students recently competed in a nationwide Scholastic Challenge.
Winning the state championship in the sixth-grade division was Ryan Eyster. Clara Wicoff, a seventh-grade student, competed with eighth-graders and took first place in the state.
The Scholastic Challenge is administered through the American Scholastic Achievement League, which was formed by a committee of middle school teachers who organized the competition to challenge students to demonstrate their knowledge and thinking skills. The contest evolved into a statewide competition in New York in 2001 and became a national contest in 2002. The online test consists of 100 questions covering a number of subjects, including math, history, social studies and art.
Several other students scored at or above the national average and will receive a certificate.
