Iola High School students Brad Bazo, Cody Cokely, Jason Tidd, Tristan Sigfusson and Eli Grover have qualified to compete in the National History Bowl at the end of April in Washington, D.C.
“I am so proud of the boys. They studied hard and were prepared for the meet last weekend in Chanute that qualified them for the national meet,” said Travis Hermstein, team coach.
Students from Gardner, Louisburg and Chanute also qualified for the national competition.
In order for the team to travel to the meet they need to raise between $3,800 and $4,000 which will cover airfare and lodging.
“I know money is tight, but we are depending on the generosity of the community to help make this trip happen for the boys,” Hermstein said.
The meets will be held at historic sites including U.S. embassies, the Smithsonian and at Mount Vernon.
“I am also asking the community for any suggestions for fundraisers to help make this trip possible. The visit to Washington, D.C., alone will be an educational experience for the team,” Hermstein said.
