Local author and crisis therapist, Aine Nevar, recently self-published an autobiography titled “Birth Cry; The Treasures of Dissociative Identity Disorder.”
Nevar’s book-signing tour, “Birth Cry Journey 2017” begins Saturday in Topeka. On Feb. 25 she will sign her book at Iola’s Around the Corner Coffee Shop at 11 a.m. Proceeds from the local signing will benefit Hope Unlimited, Inc. The book is also available through birthcry.com.
Nevar said “Birth Cry” chronicles her  personal struggle with the disorder more commonly known as Multiple Personality Disorder, and coming to terms with childhood abuse. The journey, she said, included  years of therapy, hospital stays and various prescribed medications. The writing process spanned 10 hours a day, six days a week, for almost a year. Now that the book is finished she hopes to inspire other victims of childhood abuse.
“There is going to be a year-long book signing tour partnering with child advocacy and mental health agencies across the United States,” Nevar said.
“Birth Cry,” according to Nevar, is aimed at therapists, clinicians, survivors of abuse or trauma, family members of anyone with mental illness; both males and females.
“The trauma of sexual assault and incest  goes on for years and years and for generations,” Nevar said. “When somebody has been tortured (by childhood sexual abuse) the mind can split because that same person has to go to school the next day.”
Nevar said “Birth Cry” sends a message to her readers that it’s “OK to be who you are,” and to have the courage to continue on no matter how many times you fall.
Nevar moved to Iola in January 2016 and is employed at Southeast Kansas Mental Health Center.
