It’s never too early to learn leadership skills.

The Leadership Crew, a group of six second graders at Jefferson Elementary School, gave a presentation to the USD 257 school board about their activities this year.

The group was formed under counselor Shelly Strickler, who set a goal of selecting students who can learn leadership skills, practice community service and be an example to other students.

“They are learning to think beyond their own preferences and think about others, and make decisions on how they can be a good example. They’re also learning to donate their time,” Strickler said.

The students talked about some of the projects they’ve done.

They wrote letters to Santa for Macy’s Department Stores, which donates money to the Make a Wish Foundation for each letter.

The students also organized a Veterans Day presentation, inviting veterans to come and share their experiences.

They helped Principal Tiffany Koehn stack cereal boxes donated for food pantries.

Each Monday and Friday, the students read morning announcements. During Red Ribbon Week, they used morning announcements to encourage students to be drug free and make healthy choices.
