KINCAID — The Kincaid Fair depends on Toby Amusements, Arma, to always provide an upscale carnival.
So when a scheduling conflict arose, Kincaid changed the date of its weekend affair from the traditional first weekend of October to this coming weekend.
The fair, in its 105th year, starts today and will continue through Saturday.
Wednesday afternoon Beverly Pinneo and her daughter, Sandy Weldin, were arranging flowers that by late today will fill a small building set aside for horticulture exhibits. Banners, shelves and show cases are all in place in the main fair exhibit building.
By this evening quilts, canned vegetables, farm produce and everything else expected at a rural Kansas fair will be in place and ready for viewing.
“Did you see the new Lions building,” Pinneo asked.
The Kincaid Lions put up the metal structure this year and by late Saturday morning the smell of hamburgers — fried crisp and 100 percent ground beef — will encourage anyone with the least hunger to stop by. The Lions raise hundreds of dollars each year at the concession stand, with proceeds going to community projects.
This evening’s events are a free bean feed, children’s cash grab and pedal tractor pull.
Judging of exhibits will start at noon Friday and continue into the evening. A senior citizens turtle race — maybe the fair’s most unique event — starts at 4 p.m. and bingo takes center stage at 7 o’clock.
A 2.5K walk/5K run kicks off Saturday’s portion at 8 a.m. in downtown Kincaid.
Horseshoe pitching begins at 9 a.m. and judging of homebaked pies starts at 11 a.m.
The parade, often taking an hour to complete, starts down the town’s main street promptly at 1:30 p.m. More game and fun are on tap after the parade and TA Hamilton will entertain, starting at 7 p.m., with magic tricks.
Voting for the fair queen will occur Thursday and Friday afternoons and evenings, with Morgan Louk, the 2012 queen, crowning her successor just before the parade starts.
