Due to her passion for nutrition, Iolan Terri Kretzmeier is the recipient of the 2014 Healthy Allen Award.
The Kansas Health Care Foundation award is for an individual or organization that promotes good health among the uninsured and underserved in Allen County.
The award includes a $5,000 grant. Kretzmeier, Iola, decided to donate the grant to the Allen County Community Foundation.
“I thought they were a great organization so it seemed best,” she said.
The Foundation is a tax-exempt public charity that allows people to establish endowment funds within one large foundation.
She also started the Allen County Youth Enrichment Fund. This helps organizations purchase programming or equipment to support projects for youth in Allen County.
Kretzmeier is in her 10th year as a nutrition assistant for the Family and Nutrition Program for Kansas State University Extension in Allen County. She travels to area schools and teaches students about nutrition.
Her summer is usually packed with activities. She is a Prairie Dell 4-H community leader and helps coach teams from the Southwind Extension District in Southeast Kansas. She also teaches Kids Can Cook classes and judges at county fairs.
“Whether through her day job or in her volunteer work, it is clear Terri is passionate about children and how to help them live healthier lives,” Dr. Bridget McCandless, Health Care Foundation president and chief executive officer, said in a press release. “She treats all children with respect and compassion, especially those children who struggle with health and home issues.”
Lisa Wicoff nominated Kretzmeier.
Kretzmeier said she was humbled to receive the award. “I love working with kids and I love what I do with them.”
