Iola City Council members will meet for their regular bi-monthly meeting Tuesday evening — not on Monday — because of the Columbus Day holiday.
There, the Council will once again discuss a request to install a new sidewalk along the 500 block of North Cottonwood Street.
The block, just north of Iola High School, has a sidewalk about halfway through the block, before it ends.
Nevertheless, students walking along the block continue to trudge through the homeowner’s yard.
Council members narrowly rejected a similar request in 2024, as the city unsuccessfully applied for a grant to fund the project.
The city has monies set aside for sidewalks, but those are for replacement, not new construction, Council members noted at the time.
In other items, Iola water plant superintendent Toby Ross will discuss a recent directive the city received from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, directing the city to test its water more frequently for lead.
The 6 p.m. meeting will be at the New Community Building at Riverside Park and is open to the public.
