MORAN — Plans are in the works to install a nine-hole disc golf course at the Moran City Park.

The Moran Youth Recreation Association will receive $5,000 from the Heartland Rural Electric Cooperative’s Concern for Community grant program.

Taeler Carr, who applied for the grant on behalf of the rec association, said preliminary plans are for the disc golf area to be placed south of the park’s secondary shelter at the south edge of the park.

A course designer is slated to visit in the near future to help determine how to map out the course, Carr said. She hopes the course will be ready by spring.

The Youth Recreation Association has several other irons in the fire to benefit the park, noted Carr, who also serves as Moran’s city clerk.

“We’re still seeking grants for other amenities,” Carr said.

Among her wish list items are a new walking trail and permanent cornhole facilities.

“The city does a lot for our rec association,” Carr said. “This is a way for us to collaborate and increase access to the park for everyone.”

THE MORAN course will be the second full course in Allen County. Iola has a 13-hole course at South Elm Creek Park, with a miniature disc golf course set up at Meadowbrook Park.

As a non-profit, member-owned cooperative, Heartland issues capital credits to members on an annual basis, but sometimes those credits go unclaimed, the cooperative explained in a press release.

Because those monies were intended to be returned to the communities from which they came, Heartland’s Board of Directors voted in 2019 to establish the Concern for Community grant program.

The program provides grants for up to $5,000 for capital improvement projects throughout Heartland’s service area, which reaches 12 counties in southeast Kansas. Six such grants were awarded this year, including Moran’s.
