A newly formed quilting club has been quite productive already.
On Wednesday, members of the Piece Makers Quilting Club made their first-ever large-scale donation, 30 hand-made quilts to the Pregnancy and Family Center in Iola.
The group, which meets each Wednesday morning at Yates Center’s Christian Liberty Fellowship Church, has already started its second batch of quilts, which will go to a natal intensive care unit at a Kansas City-area hospital.
Other quilts will be handed out to area residents suffering hardships.
“We’re going to make this an ongoing project,” said Lynn Hobbs, one of the founders, who was inspired by a recent church sermon in which members were encouraged to share God’s love by helping others.
Since then, a group of 10 sewing enthusiasts have met regularly over the past two months.
Hobbs said she was pleasantly surprised the members were able to create the 30 quilts as quickly as they did.
On top of the donations, the group also sells chances for a raffle quilt each Wednesday evening at Yates Center Farmers Market, with proceeds used to purchase more supplies.
Others are welcome to join in on the fun, regardless of their sewing ability.
“Just bring your sewing machine,” Hobbs said.
The group meets from 9 a.m. to noon each Wednesday at the church at 811 S. Prairie St.
Piece Makers also accepts fabric and monetary donations, Hobbs said.
