The SAFE BASE summer program kicked off Monday, welcoming students for another season of learning, recreation and adventure.
The free program, available to all K-8th grade students who live within USD 257, provides a chance to stay engaged during the summer months through hands-on activities, educational experiences and weekly field trips.
Throughout June, students will spend three days each week participating in activities at Iola Elementary School. Sessions run from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday through Wednesday.
EACH THURSDAY, students who meet attendance requirements will travel to destinations across the region, giving them a chance to explore new places and enjoy experiences not typically available in the classroom.
This Thursday’s destination is Skate City in Overland Park, offering a day of skating and recreation.
Several other popular destinations are on tap. On June 11, participants will travel to Bridal Cave in Camdenton, Mo., where they will tour one of the state’s most well-known natural attractions and learn about its unique geological formations and history.
The following week, students will head to Urban Air Trampoline Park in Lenexa. The month will conclude with a trip to Rock River Rapids Water Park in Derby on June 25, a welcome chance to cool off and celebrate summer.
STUDENTS ARE not required to attend every week of the SAFE BASE program. Families may choose the weeks that best fit their schedules. However, students must attend each day of activities during a particular week in order to be eligible for that week’s field trip.
In addition to educational and recreational opportunities, the program also ensures students have access to nutritious meals throughout the day. Participants receive free breakfast and lunch through the school district’s summer meal program.
The SAFE BASE program has become a summer tradition for many local families, offering a safe and structured environment where students can continue learning while school is out of session.
