HUMBOLDT — Forget about John Wooden’s UCLA basketball teams or Tom Brady’s New England Patriots.

If the students keep this up, Humboldt High School’s journalism program will soon be approaching Ming Dynasty or Ottoman Empire status.

The HHS journalism program picked up its 16th consecutive Kansas Scholastic Press Association state championship over the weekend.

The Class 2A Humboldt squad was the only program across all classifications (Classes range from 1A to 6A) to take the top spot in every sweepstakes category of design, photography, multimedia and writing.

“I’m extremely proud of everyone who put effort into our competition,” junior Addy Borjas said in a press release. “I couldn’t be more grateful.”

Humboldt had several standouts, particularly Jack Works, who earned first place in headline writing and design, news page design, newspaper sports writing and yearbook sports writing.

Braylynn Watson brought home first-place finishes in editorial writing and news writing, Savannah Koch was tops in voiceover, and America Sinclair topped all comers in yearbook design.

As a team, Humboldt also secured nine individual second-place finishes, seven in third, 11 in fourth, eight in fifth and five sixth-place finishes.
