Iolan Tom Ellis performs Wednesday during an Open Mic Night session at Timeout Tavern in downtown Iola.

Performers near and far have found a fun-filled outlet to show off their musical talents in Iola.

For the past several weeks, a handful of musicians have made their way to Iola’s Timeout Tavern, 118 E. Jackson Ave., on Wednesday nights for what’s become Open Mic Night.

Some, such as Iolan Tom Ellis, are experienced musicians.

Ellis, known more in these parts for his visual artistry, proved to be a musical aficionado as well,

highlighting Wednesday’s show with a number of ballads, including a powerful rendition of “They Call the Wind, Maria,” from the Broadway musical “Paint Your Wagon.”

Others, including newcomer Alex Jett, are still honing their craft.

Jett regaled the audience with more contemporary tunes from Blink 182, Third Eye Blind and Green Day. His set was sprinkled with a bit of stand-up comedy.

“What’s a pirate’s favorite letter?” he asked during a short break.

“Arrrrrrr!” an audience member replied.

“Nope,” Jett said. “People think that, but it’s actually the C.”

Wednesday’s other performer, Judd Hawley, gave a spot-on rendition of Steve Miller’s classic “Joker.”

MOST Wednesdays have three or four performers, noted Timeout Tavern owner Darrell Chester, although as many as 10 have shown up some weeks.

Some only sing; others stick to playing; most do both.

Still others have opted for other means of entertainment.
