Memorial Day services in Highland Cemetery will begin with a flag-raising at 11 a.m. this year. Iola Municipal Band will play during the flag-raising ceremony.
Maj. Erica (Hillbrant) Christie of Hays will be the guest speaker.
Christie, daughter of Jim and the late Lucille Hillbrant of Iola, is on active duty with the Army National Guard. She is the first female soldier to speak at the event, which has been held since 1917 or 1918.
The service will conclude with a 21-gun salute and “Taps.”
In case of rain, the ceremony will move to the American Legion Hall, 712 W. Patterson Ave.
Iola Municipal Band will also present a concert at 4 p.m. Saturday on the bandstand in the Iola square. The band’s first concert of the summer season will be at 8 p.m. June 3 at the bandstand.
