T

his afternoon Molly Maxwell and Alec Horton will start their lives as husband and wife.

The 4:30 p.m. ceremony at Wesley United Methodist Church will include music provided by a cellist and violinist, a special exchange among guests of lighting candles, as well as the traditional vows. Afterward is dinner and two-stepping at Miller’s on Madison.

Guesses are the day will go by in a blur.

Which is a touch sad, considering all the attention to detail she has devoted to the occasion.

For Molly, her wedding day has been in the making — off and on — for more than a year, ever since their November 2014 engagement.

“I wouldn’t actually recommend having this much time,” she said. “It gives you the opportunity to change your mind a lot.”

On the other hand, some things once given priority have since lost their status.

And when it comes to planning a wedding, there’s such a thing as TMI — too much information.

Postings on Pinterest had her initially envisioning an elaborately decorated altar spilling over with flowers, ribbons and candles. She’s since opted for a more minimal — what she calls “woodsy” — look.

“There’ll be lots of greenery,” with the “pop” of color coming from the bridesmaids’ gold dresses and her bouquet, a combination of soft pinks, deep fuscia and burgundy.

Because Molly and Alec have been living on the other side of the state — 326 miles — from each other for the better part of a year, their anticipation for today is stratospheric.

“At this point, we just want to be married,” she said.

Both 23, Molly and Alec met the second semester of their freshman year at Kansas State University and have been a couple ever since.

In May, Alec graduated with a degree in agronomy and returned to farming in western Kansas.

Molly student taught in Junction City fall semester, graduating in December with a degree in elementary education. Since then, it’s been “all wedding.”

Molly is the daughter of Lori Maxwell and Eric Maxwell and a 2011 graduate of Iola High School.
