MORAN — Members of the Moran City Council voted unanimously to grant permission to Chris King to remove the sidewalk across from Stub’s Market off of Randolph Street.
“The sidewalk is in disrepair and I want to do some improvements there and that would make it a lot easier,” King said on Monday.
The sidewalk is not the only change residents of Moran will see. Police Chief Shane Smith asked the council to consider putting up a stop sign at the intersection of Hill and Spruce Streets after a member of the community voiced concern to the chief about children playing in the area.  The members voted to put up a sign that will stop traffic heading east down Hill Street.
“After a kid gets run over, it’s the worst time to start thinking about it,” Jim Mueller said.
Members also voted unanimously to allow the chief to spend up to $300 on a microchip reader to help identify stray pets.
In other news, the fitness center in Moran continues to get closer to completion. Damaris Kunkler, Thrive Allen County’s program director, said there will either be a grand opening or an open house of the fitness center May 6, corresponding with Moran’s city-wide garage sale. Which event takes place will depend on the progress made on the center during the next month. There will be a healthy cooking demonstration by Allen County’s GROW Food and Farm Council. City council members voted to purchase two horse mats from Orscheln Farm & Home and a security system from CDL Electric for the fitness center.  Purchasing a weight bench will be discussed at their next meeting but the members said they are open to donations.
City Clerk Lori Evans reminded Phil Merkel, Jim Mueller and Chad Lawson that their terms are up this year and that they can register with the Iola City Clerk’s office if they intend to run again this fall.
