Every week a new addition is made to the Allen County Farmer’s Market. Last week it had the first of six cooking demonstrations; this week Thrive Allen County is putting together a drum circle.
The unique element to a drum circle is the players do not have a sheet of music. Instead one drummer “starts with their own beat and everyone adds their own flavor,” drummer Bryson Higbee said.
Higbee is a college student at Allen Community College and will perform with about five other musicians at the farmer’s market Thursday evening.
He was approached by Thrive Allen County program director Damaris Kunkle, who heard Higbee and his roommate perform at the Allen County Hospital ground-breaking ceremony in May.
“My roommate really was the one who got it all set up and spoke with Damaris the most, but when he asked me about it I was like ‘sure, sounds entertaining,’” Higbee said.
The hope for the drum circle is to get more people involved in the market.
“We are really encouraging audience participation,” Kunkler said.
Higbee compares a drum circle to a small community.
“A drum circle is like Iola, everyone has a job, but all the jobs are different. We all play the drums but our sounds are all a little bit different,” he said. “I am extremely excited to see how the different elements will sound.”
The drum circle will perform Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
